Dear Beanpod,
Your Mom and I took some classes at the hospital yesterday to get some tips about how to take care of you in your early days of life.
It’s pretty clear that although you will be beautiful to us, you are also going to be extremely gross
. This is not your problem. I’m steeling my nerves.
There can be no doubt that humans are biological creatures. Unless you are in the field of biological sciences, which I am not, most of us don’t really think about ourselves or our contemporaries as “biological creatures” that often. We live, we love, we despair, we make decisions; overall, we experience a whole host of emotions and activity in our conscious moments of life.
As we’ve been trying to learn as much as we can to prepare for your birth, I’ve had the opportunity to consider and confront the biology behind it all. It is mind blowing when you think about all of the little processes and molecules that have to align just right to result in the creation of a new human life.
The biology is fascinating as much as it is true. What’s interesting though is that for much of human history, there has been a great debate about if we are more than just biological creatures. You are entering the world at a time where we possess amazing knowledge of how the human body works, not to mention the elements that dictate the functions of the universe. There is more and more of a sense that we know so much now that we can soon master the biology. We can use algorithms to supplement our biology and course correct to achieve optimal results reliably. You are being born into what likely will be known as the age of artificial intelligence.
Beanpod, your biology is fascinating to me. But beyond that, I really believe that underpinning your biology is something deeper. You have a unique spirit, a soul – a connection to the Creator. I’m not necessarily afraid or defiant of the amazing technologies we have available in this day and age, but I do see that it may start to become “out of style” to believe in something beyond the biology of our existence.
I’ll do my best to help you build a solid foundation in this age of your existence, so that you can be prepared for the change that will come in your generation. I hope you’ll believe in your “spark.”
See you soon, beanpod.
Love,
Your Dad
